Book review
“Slam” by Nick Hornby
The author of this book is Nick Hornby. Mr. Hornby is an author who likes to write about he main persons thoughts and feelings. Usually Nick Hornby only writes books about older people who live the life as parents. This book is about a sixteen year old boy getting to know that his ex-girlfriend is pregnant, and that she wants to keep it. The book shows all the problems that teenage parents have to go through. The book shows signs of happiness, sadness and a very big problem in England today, Teenage Parenting.
The boys name is Sam and is ex-girlfriend is Alicia. They met after a party hosted by Sam’s mother. In the beginning Alicia acted like a superior jerk, but after time, when she got to know Sam she started to like him. Sam is a big skateboard enthusiast and is pretty good at it. Sam goes to high school and got a lot of friends. Some of the books highlights is Sam’s opinion of the grownups wicked world and the teenage world. Sam’s personality is a little wired, his mum is a divorced 32 years old and she got him when she was sixteen.
Some minutes of unprotected sex and his life is about to change. The more Alicia and Sam got to know each other the more they started hanging around. In just a matter of weeks they were already a couple. In this relationship Sam lost his virginity and his teenage life. After getting the message from Alicia, that she was pregnant he got panic and ran away. He threw his mobile into the see and left to Hastings, but came back after some time. When he gets back he feels he have to talk to Alicia.
He was only away one day and Alicia didn’t even notice that he had been gone. When he goes to Alicia and talks with here, they found out that the right thing to do was telling the parents about everything. When they tell Alicia’s mom and dad they start yelling at Sam, and they mean that everything is his fault. The two families is in different social classes, Alicia’s mom calls Sam’s family “you people” and abuse the family.
Nick Hornby is a very good writer and he always tells about the person’s feelings and thoughts. The book is roman and there are hints of romance and the long tough way to become and adult. Nick Hornby writs in a way in the main persons head. When I was reading I felt like I was in his head, like I were the brain. The story is told from Sam, witch makes the story even more realistic.
This book was very good, but I didn’t like that the author told us so much about the thoughts and feelings of the main person, but after all I would recommend the book. I think this book would be perfect for a teenage from 12 to 17 years old.The good thing about this book is that it shows signs of the real life for a teenage parent and can actually give the teenagers advice.
